Taking a Look at the Role of a High Court Enforcement Officer

Yesterdays Credit Control Network Seminar at Grays Hotel & Conference Centre in Telford went really well, and we enjoyed a detailed presentation given by Martin Leyshon, one of the Directors of High Court Enforcement Group. Martin, who was originally appointed as a Sheriffs Officer back in 1995 and who also sits as Vice Chairman of the High Court Enforcement Officers Association, was accompanied by Amir Ali, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Civil Court Users Association.
As I instruct High Court Enforcement Officers to recover outstanding civil judgment debts for my clients in the Debt Recovery Unit on a regular basis, this was a handy opportunity for some of our clients to meet a High Court Enforcement Officer face to face and to question him about the processes High Court Enforcement Officers follow. It also helped us to learn more about the daily life of a High Court Enforcement Officer coupled with what training they have to undergo, whether it involves collecting debts or carrying out environmental evictions e.g. removal of squatters!
Im going to spend a day with one of the local High Court Enforcement Officers soon to see first hand how they work, and get a day in the life glimpse! It should be an interesting day and Im looking forward to seeing how this side of debt recovery works, as its always good to get a rounder understanding of your own job by finding out about those who work so closely with you.

Ludlow Employment Seminar

The feedback from the recent Employment Law Seminar was excellent. Everyone attending found John Merrys presentation extremely informative, he gave an employment law update and also information on how to deal with long term absence. Around 20 guests attended and were greeted with pastries and fruit on their arrival. The Employment Law Seminars have a good following in the Telford area so we are now bringing this successful seminar down to the businesses of South Shropshire so they can see what it is all about and benefit from Johns straight talking presentation. The next Employment Law Seminar is in Telford on 11 February and we will be looking at bringing this down to South Shropshire at Easter time.

Private Client and Family Seminar

The family and private client team held a joint seminar at our Ludlow office on Wednesday 7 October. These presentations were somewhat different from the norm with the private client team using a game of snakes and ladders to portray the complexities of not having a will and the family team focusing on a fictional case study. The case study involved an aging rock star who entered the marriage with lots of assets and his model wife who had no real assets, their 3 year marriage was ending and he had no pre-nup in place before the marriage so was in a difficult situation this bears no resemblance to any real life people! The feedback was excellent with everybody enjoying the informal approach and the complementary snakes and ladders board which came complete with rock star counters. The seminar ended with a buffet lunch and it was a real success so we will be looking at bringing this seminar to Shrewsbury in the new year.

Motoring Offences - Need Some Help?

I was delighted to be invited to make a short presentation, about motoring offences and the implications for businesses, at this mornings Employment Law Seminar which took place at the Telford International Centre. John Merry started things off with a general legal update; I then offered some practical advice in relation to speeding offences, S172 notices those notices that are issued when you fail to provide your details and the consequences of disqualification. More detailed information, about how my team and I can possibly help in relation to motoring offences, can be found here: http://bit.ly/1903Rd, email motoringoffences@lblaw.co.uk or call 0845 543 0302

Credit Control Network

Another fantastic Credit Control Network was held at the Shrewsbury office on Tuesday. Around 30 people attended this succesful event and the feedback received was great. The presentation, delivered by Lucy Swallow and Andrew Pegg - solicitors in the Dispute Resolution Team, centred on 'proving your claim', and included a real life case study in order to help explain the topic. The seminar finished with a superb buffet lunch and we would like to thank Aramayo's for the fabulous food - the toffee meringues with seasonal fruits were sensational! Looking forward to the next Credit Control Network Seminar which we will be holding in January/February 2010 - how far away does that seem!&amp;lt;!--

Summer Twitter Madness in Ludlow

Twitter seems to be being mentioned everywhere right now - it's becoming a very popular method of social media and so when PerfectArc, the Rural Meeting Place and ourselves, decided to put on a free talk about how Twitter can help businesses, we weren't really surprised with the response.Around 30 guests listened to Twitter do's and don'ts - the most important being don't over sell! Case studies from Hopton House Bed & Breakfast, Border Cars and the Abundant Shop helped demonstrate the merits of tweeting. Cakes - kindly provided by Price & Sons were enjoyed and there were plenty of opportunities for the guests to network with each other. If you are just starting up on Twitter and would like to follow those of us who were involved with the presentation - here are the names @PerfectArc, @carolermp, @hoptonhousebnb, @bordercars, @lanyonbowdler, @AbundantShop and @pricesthebakers.And finally, we will be holding another of these events soon, so if you are interested either send a tweet or email me at amanda.jones@lblaw.co.uk. Happy tweeting!!!

What a Success!

Feedback at yesterday's Employment Law seminar was excellent, first time attendee Paul Richards of GKN Autostructures, commented that both the presenter and content were excellent, he went on to say John Merry was "the most
straight talking and practical lawyer I have heard in a long time."The event was held at the Telford International Centre. John Merry, Head of the Employment Department started by delivering a general update on changes in the law, he followed this with a comprehensive overview of the ACAS Code and Guidance Notes. The next Employment Law Seminar, to be held in the Telford area, will take place in September. We are likely to offer the businesses of South Shropshire the chance to benefit from John's coverage on ACAS, at some point in June.
