Company Commercial Team Compete in the Cold

The Company Commercial team at Lanyon Bowdler were active last weekend training for and competing in the various sporting passions they pursue when not in the office.
Kathryn Morgans, a trainee solicitor in the team, represented Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club on Saturday 28 January at the Midlands Counties Cross Country Championships in Nottingham. Kathryn said: The womens race was a national standard event and took in several muddy and hilly loops of Wollaton Hall and Deer Park. Despite being sunny it was really cold so it was good to see runners of all abilities from Shropshire and the West Midlands turning out to compete.
Ruth James, associate solicitor, had a successful day on Sunday 29 January competing at the Stourport Head of the River race as a member of the womens eight from Ironbridge Rowing Club. Ruths crew coped with the freezing conditions on the water and cruised to victory in both the morning and afternoon divisions. Ruth, who rows at number seven seat, commented: It was difficult to keep warm sat waiting for the race to start, but rowing a 4,500 metre course soon warms you up! We were pleased with our win in the morning but were thrilled to win again in a higher category in the afternoon - a clean sweep for Ironbridge!
Meanwhile, partner and head of the team Richard Murrall is well into a training schedule preparing for his forthcoming coast-to-coast bike ride challenge which he intends to complete in May. Richard spent Sunday out on his bike in the cold and fog covering a 32 mile training circuit through the West Midlands. He said: I am conscious that cycling coast-to-coast in three days will be tough, so Im very aware that there is still much work to be done.

Shropshire Youth Theatre to Perform Classic Play at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn

The ambitious Shropshire Youth Theatre is a hive of activity once more as preparations and rehearsals start in earnest for the companys next annual production Bertolt Brechts The Caucasian Chalk Circle, which will run on 23 and 24 March 2012 at Shrewsburys Theatre Severn. Lanyon Bowdler was delighted to sponsor the groups hugely successful March 2011 production of The Cherry Orchard, at the Theatre Severn and is only too pleased to support their next venture! The play tells the story of a servant girls growing bond with a baby she rescues in the midst of a revolution. The text also gives the actors the chance to form a small music group which will perform the accompaniment to the songs that form a vital part of the epic drama. In addition, the actors have to learn a new skill puppetry! This will mean special workshops and the opportunity for the company to rise to a new challenge! Committee Chairman Matthew Broomfield has been keeping us up to date on progress so far, and tells me that the rehearsals are coming along well and on schedule. At the moment they are working their way through the play and working on each scene as they come to it under the guidance of their director, Andrew Bannerman. The musicians have also been able to share some of their work with the actors to explore the sounds and rhythms to fit these in with the relevant sections of the play. Well look forward to hearing how they get on with their puppet rehearsals soon.

Halloween Themed Dress Down Day

All Hallows Eve saw our staff getting into the spirit of the day in an effort to raise money for charity. All six of Lanyon Bowdlers offices took part in the festivities. Members of the public attending the Shrewsbury office would have been greeted with the sight of bats and cauldrons adorning the reception desk and our reception staff in wigs and witches hats. The more adventurous members of staff donned full Halloween fancy dress with others joining in with a black and orange theme.
Every member of staff made a monetary contribution on their arrival at work. Various other events took place throughout the day with the firms budding bakers working hard to produce an array of wonderful cakes. Raffles were held throughout our offices and in addition the Shrewsbury office held a guess the number of sweets in the jar competition. Without fail all staff joined in with the activities remembering the worthy causes that were to benefit from the proceeds of the day.
Throughout the year we hold various events for staff in an effort to raise funds in support of local charities. This year Lanyon Bowdler are supporting three local charities, Severndale Specialist School in Monkmoor, Club 2000 Sport & Leisure for the Disabled in Telford and Friends of the Victoria Centre in Oswestry.
In total we raised 545.13. Chairman of the Charities Committee, Senior Partner Peter Flint congratulated all staff on the excellent result. The money will now be distributed to the chosen charities.

This Saturday 29 October, Lanyon Bowdlers very own in-house tenor and soprano saxophonist Edward Rees will be performing smooth jazz sounds alongside pianist Jim Wynn and bassist Ben Markland. Jim is a Birmingham Conservatoire graduate and, at the moment, is best known for his Nonette which performs classic arrangements drawn from Miles Davis seminal Birth of the Cool album. Ben is one of the most in demand jazz musicians in the West Midlands. He's played with everyone from Georgie Fame to Cliff Richard! His own latest group featured recently on BBC Radio 3's Jazz Line Up.The venue for this gig is Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury and it runs from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. It is part of Theatre Severns Saturday Jazz programme, the present season of which is running until the end of November. Admission is free. However, people attending are asked to make a voluntary donation. This event is ideal for everyone and children are very welcome its national drawing month, so paper and pencils will be provided! The excellent Theatre Severn restaurant is open throughout the gig. Edward says Miles Davis is a running theme through the 29 October gig as we are aiming to present music predominantly by three of the most beloved Jazz giants of the last 50 or so years: Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Michael Brecker. As it's almost Halloween, we'll also try to throw in a couple of numbers with a spooky connection.Follow Edward on Twitter @EdwardRees to keep up to date with the run up to this concert, or Like Saturday Jazz at Theatre Severn on Facebook to find out more. Alternatively contact info@lblaw.co.uk.

Lanyon Bowdler Support Underdog Racing Team

My name is Danny Blair. This blog doesnt relate to law in any way so please bear with me!I had my first KX60 on my 7th birthday it was a right old banger but I quickly got hooked and when I was 8 I had a KX65. In 2004 I joined North Midlands MX and thats when the race bug kicked in. In 2005 I joined Warley Wasps schoolboy MX club, still on my KX65 and in my first race with them I came 34th. Throughout the season I worked my way through the pack and came 7th in the winter series and 2nd in the club championships. In 2006 I stayed with Warley Wasps and came 1st in the summer, winter series and club championships. Dad also got a trophy for best maintained bike (ha ha!). In 2006 I also took part in the BSMA finals and came 6th, qualified for the Wulfsport Supercross at Cardiffs Millennium stadium and entered the Weston Beach race and finished 6th. This was a proud moment for me as this meant my name was on Sky Sports TV.In 2007 I started to train with Rikki Priest MX Coach Academy thanks to the kind sponsorship of Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors. This involved me training in the UK, Belgium, Holland, France and Ireland and having the odd race in Ireland. I moved up on to a KX 85 sw and then onto a Suzuki 85 bw and raced in 2007 and 2008 in the British Masters. During this time I raced at different tracks with ACU/Orpa/BSMA. I also took part in the Red Bull Youth Elite Cup and finished most of the meetings in the top twenty. After a break at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009 due to an injury I got training at Tony Moto Parc. At the age of 14 I moved up to a Suzuki 250f and took 6 months off from racing as I had to fully recover from my injuries. This was such a boring time! During my first full season after returning to motox, I came 3rd overall in the schoolboy class in Cheshire North West MX club. This year I joined the AMCA - Newport club, riding a KTM 250f. As I had not been a member of the AMCA before I was asked to start in the senior group but after coming first in my first three meetings I was moved up into the experts group. I had my first MX2 youth expert race win in April 2011 and came first in the second round of the MX2 youth championship and whilst I qualified first in the second round, had to pull out of the championships because of bike problems. In July I was approached to join a new motox team for 2012 The Underdog Racing Team. Kirk Owen is managing the team, which includes an international rider and has obtained the support of a number of sponsors. These are exciting times and I am looking forward to 2012 and competing in the British Masters series and also am hoping to qualify for the AMCA championships.Lanyon Bowdler has continued to support me throughout, and I am very thankful to them for this.

Georgina Jones Enjoys Work Experience with Lanyon Bowdler

Georgina has joined the marketing team for a day and so I asked her to let me know what she hoped to gain from spending some time with the firm, she responded:"I initially wanted to do my work experience at a law firm, because its something that really interests me, and something which I would very possibly like to study in further education. I also wanted to get a feel of what its like to work in a professional office environment, and which area of the business I would find particularly interesting."So far doing my work experience at Lanyon Bowdler, has helped me in finding out about all of the above, and is proving to be a very interesting, fun and helpful experience. On the first day with Lanyon Bowdler I was working in the clinical negligence department. I spent the day meeting clients with different solicitors, and I also listened in on a screening phone call. This was extremely interesting, as it showed me what kind of cases the firm accepts, and the different factors that are involved in deciding whether to take on a claim, or whether to decline it. "On my second day with the firm, I joined the criminal department, and was able to go to court, and learn about how the barristers work, and also sit in court cases, and get a general feel of what goes on. I then spent the last half of my day, visiting the police station, and reading through interesting client files. I enjoyed myself very much, because I was able to experience environments which I had little knowledge about."I am now on my third day, and have joined the marketing department in Wellington. This is a very different side of the business, than the other departments I have been working with so far, and I am learning how the communication works between them. I have also learned about how beneficial adverts are in different forms, such as newspaper, internet, radio etc. "I am really enjoying my time with the firm, and would definitely recommend doing work experience here, if its something youre really interested in. Lanyon Bowdler is a brilliant firm, and I am very grateful for the week I am spending here."Thanks for the great feedback Georgie.

The stunning seaside garden that wowed the crowds at Shrewsbury Flower Show is now being recreated at Severndale Specialist School. When the students return from their summer holidays they will be greeted with quite a different view. Below is a photograph of the space beforehand.A big thank you to Synthetic Turf Management who were on site immediately after the show in order to lay the creative colourful flooring. Fish and sea creatures, designed by the students and cleverly created by Paul DT Technician at Severndale, swim happily amongst the waves. The surf shack is a perfect fit, and it is proposed that a programme of planting be introduced, so that the students can see the roof of the shack grow. The sea worn timbers, rescued from the beach at Borth, add to the seaside feel and will hold an array of coastal plants and grasses. It is anticipated the garden will be complete within the next few days, and therefore this post will be updated in due course.

August is always a busy time for us - two fairly large shows, almost back to back, keep us on our toes!Lanyon Bowdler have sponsored one of the Show Jumping classes at Shrewsbury Flower Show for a number of years. This year the class was on Saturday 13 August. About 25 riders completed the course in a timed competition. The sun shone and there was a good crowd who enjoyed an exciting competition where just 1/100th of a second split first and second place. The winner was Steven Whitaker riding Royal Rose, seen here clearing one of the jumps (with the famous St Chad's Church in the background).Partner Allison Birtles enjoys handing out the rosettes to the winners - fabulous shot below of her with William Funnell who came third on Beowulf. And of course, a mention for our wonderful show garden. This year we were thrilled to be awarded one of Shropshire Horticultural Society's Gold Medals for our Seaside Garden. We had so many people stop look at the garden, and listen to Beth Prior - who sang some wonderful songs with a true sunshine beachy feel.

Looking Forward to the Summer Shows

Summer brings with it numerous excellent shows and events in Shropshire, and the marketing department has been busy preparing for Lanyon Bowdlers involvement in three of the major events in the county. On Thursday 4 August we will be at the Burwarton Show, one of the leading agricultural events in the country and always a thoroughly enjoyable day. We have a marquee and provide hot and cold drinks, serve delicious locally made cakes, and have Lanyon Bowdler lawyers on hand to answer any legal queries visitors may have. In addition, we will be holding a 'Guess the Number of Lanyon Bowdler Bears' competition, which will involve a batch of our popular bears being hidden away in a crate full of straw, with prizes for the first correct entries drawn. A new form of entertainment at the show this year will be the the 'Bridgnorth Scarecrow Trail' competition (in aid of cancer Research UK and The Stroke Association) which we have entered as it is for two very worthy causes and also sounds like a lot of fun! On Saturday 6 August we head to the Oswestry Showground for the Oswestry Show, now in its 126th year, and again we will be providing refreshments, and representatives from our Oswestry office on Church Street will be available to chat and offer assistance with any legal queries. We'll also be running the 'Guess the Number of Lanyon Bowdler Bears' competition again with further prizes on offer. Finally, on 12 and 13 August we will be at the Shrewsbury Flower Show with our seaside theme show garden entry! The garden has been created for Severndale Specialist School, one of our chosen charities for this year, and we are extremely fortunate to have had award winning garden designer Mike Russell on board with us again. Mike is very talented and always brings unique and inventive designs to the table. We really are on countdown to the show now, and it has been a lot of hard work and organisation, but we have all of our main features ready to go including the most amazing copper fish water feature - made by incredibly talented local craftsman Richard Taylor. The fish is designed to rock when the water flows through it and we are hoping it will draw the crowds!

How to go about applying for a Training Contract at Lanyon Bowdler

We are now approaching the time of year when the deadline closes for applications for training contracts. Training partner Colin Spanner and current trainees Lynsey Cater and Louise Howard answer questions on what Lanyon Bowdler look for in a trainee and what to expect.
Why Lanyon Bowdler?
As a firm Lanyon Bowdler is modern and very client focused. The firm provides a full range of legal advice throughout Shropshire and Herefordshire, as well as nationally. Having previously been winners of Lawcareers.Nets Trainee Solicitor Award for Best Recruiter Small Firm in 2009 (also winner in 2004 and nominated 2007 & 2008), the firm was nominated in the Best Trainer category of these awards in 2010.
The firm is recognised as Investors in People and our commitment to training and development was acknowledged in 2009 when we won the Training Award at the Midlands Business Awards. 2010 also saw us win the Law Firm of the Year (5 - 15 partners) at the Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards.
How many trainees do you take on?
At Lanyon Bowdler the policy is to offer two training contracts each year. As a training contract lasts two years, we therefore have four trainees at any one time, with two joining in September each year.
How many applications do you receive?
Each year we are inundated with applications for training contracts. This is especially so as not many local firms regularly take on trainees. This year we received 270 applications for a contract in 2011.
When is the closing date?
All positions for 2011 have now been filled. Applications for 2012 need to be submitted by 31 January 2011.
What do you look for in potential trainees?
To begin with, good academic records, and not just at degree level. We look back as far as GCSEs and A Levels. It is also important that a potential candidate is local to the area, or has connections with it, as we do like to retain our trainees. Hobbies and interests are also of relevance, as someone who has taken a year out or done some voluntary work shows that they have made the extra effort this may give them an advantage over someone with identical qualifications.
What areas of law do trainees have seats in?
Trainees usually spend six months in a department so that over the contract period they gain experience in four areas of work, one of which will be contentious. Lanyon Bowdler has a wide range of legal departments and where possible, trainees are given a choice of seats.
What can I expect if I am invited to interview?
Lynsey Cater said when I was interviewed there was a two stage process but no presentation. I was asked questions which were aimed at the particular stage I was at and what I was studying at the time.
Louise Howards experience was a first general interview which included talking about the details on my CV, (I was so nervous I couldnt remember what A-Levels I had done and had to be prompted), and legal questions. The questions were tailored to the stage of my training, for example I hadnt yet completed the LPC so they concentrated on areas of law I would have covered on the CPE. The second interview included questions on current affairs where the interviewers clearly wanted to hear you talk and see how you reasoned about a particular situation.
What can I expect if I am offered a Training Contract?
The SRA requirement is that once a training contract has started, the trainee needs to keep a training record which must be completed throughout the two year period and submitted to the training principal at the end. It should record all the tasks completed whilst being a trainee and includes information such as who the task was completed for, what the task was, what skills were used and what was learnt from it.
There are also the compulsory modules of the Professional Skills Course to complete. These cover client care, finance and business skills, advocacy and communication. There are a further four elective modules which you chose according to what areas of law you are interested in.and just when you think all exams are over, theres a finance exam!
What happens then?
Lanyon Bowdler has an excellent record of retaining its trainees. The range of areas of law covered by the firm offers great opportunities for those wishing to train in law.
Lynsey Cater is now a fully qualified solicitor and working in Lanyon Bowdlers Commercial Property Department and Louise Howard is currently in her last seat and due to complete her training contract in September 2011.
