Company Commercial Team Compete in the Cold

The Company Commercial team at Lanyon Bowdler were active last weekend training for and competing in the various sporting passions they pursue when not in the office.
Kathryn Morgans, a trainee solicitor in the team, represented Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club on Saturday 28 January at the Midlands Counties Cross Country Championships in Nottingham. Kathryn said: The womens race was a national standard event and took in several muddy and hilly loops of Wollaton Hall and Deer Park. Despite being sunny it was really cold so it was good to see runners of all abilities from Shropshire and the West Midlands turning out to compete.
Ruth James, associate solicitor, had a successful day on Sunday 29 January competing at the Stourport Head of the River race as a member of the womens eight from Ironbridge Rowing Club. Ruths crew coped with the freezing conditions on the water and cruised to victory in both the morning and afternoon divisions. Ruth, who rows at number seven seat, commented: It was difficult to keep warm sat waiting for the race to start, but rowing a 4,500 metre course soon warms you up! We were pleased with our win in the morning but were thrilled to win again in a higher category in the afternoon - a clean sweep for Ironbridge!
Meanwhile, partner and head of the team Richard Murrall is well into a training schedule preparing for his forthcoming coast-to-coast bike ride challenge which he intends to complete in May. Richard spent Sunday out on his bike in the cold and fog covering a 32 mile training circuit through the West Midlands. He said: I am conscious that cycling coast-to-coast in three days will be tough, so Im very aware that there is still much work to be done.

Lanyon Bowdler Supporting Jazz Sounds at Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury

This Saturday 29 October, Lanyon Bowdlers very own in-house tenor and soprano saxophonist Edward Rees will be performing smooth jazz sounds alongside pianist Jim Wynn and bassist Ben Markland. Jim is a Birmingham Conservatoire graduate and, at the moment, is best known for his Nonette which performs classic arrangements drawn from Miles Davis seminal Birth of the Cool album. Ben is one of the most in demand jazz musicians in the West Midlands. He's played with everyone from Georgie Fame to Cliff Richard! His own latest group featured recently on BBC Radio 3's Jazz Line Up.The venue for this gig is Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury and it runs from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. It is part of Theatre Severns Saturday Jazz programme, the present season of which is running until the end of November. Admission is free. However, people attending are asked to make a voluntary donation. This event is ideal for everyone and children are very welcome its national drawing month, so paper and pencils will be provided! The excellent Theatre Severn restaurant is open throughout the gig. Edward says Miles Davis is a running theme through the 29 October gig as we are aiming to present music predominantly by three of the most beloved Jazz giants of the last 50 or so years: Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Michael Brecker. As it's almost Halloween, we'll also try to throw in a couple of numbers with a spooky connection.Follow Edward on Twitter @EdwardRees to keep up to date with the run up to this concert, or Like Saturday Jazz at Theatre Severn on Facebook to find out more. Alternatively contact info@lblaw.co.uk.

Georgina Jones Enjoys Work Experience with Lanyon Bowdler

Georgina has joined the marketing team for a day and so I asked her to let me know what she hoped to gain from spending some time with the firm, she responded:"I initially wanted to do my work experience at a law firm, because its something that really interests me, and something which I would very possibly like to study in further education. I also wanted to get a feel of what its like to work in a professional office environment, and which area of the business I would find particularly interesting."So far doing my work experience at Lanyon Bowdler, has helped me in finding out about all of the above, and is proving to be a very interesting, fun and helpful experience. On the first day with Lanyon Bowdler I was working in the clinical negligence department. I spent the day meeting clients with different solicitors, and I also listened in on a screening phone call. This was extremely interesting, as it showed me what kind of cases the firm accepts, and the different factors that are involved in deciding whether to take on a claim, or whether to decline it. "On my second day with the firm, I joined the criminal department, and was able to go to court, and learn about how the barristers work, and also sit in court cases, and get a general feel of what goes on. I then spent the last half of my day, visiting the police station, and reading through interesting client files. I enjoyed myself very much, because I was able to experience environments which I had little knowledge about."I am now on my third day, and have joined the marketing department in Wellington. This is a very different side of the business, than the other departments I have been working with so far, and I am learning how the communication works between them. I have also learned about how beneficial adverts are in different forms, such as newspaper, internet, radio etc. "I am really enjoying my time with the firm, and would definitely recommend doing work experience here, if its something youre really interested in. Lanyon Bowdler is a brilliant firm, and I am very grateful for the week I am spending here."Thanks for the great feedback Georgie.

Show Garden is Being Built at Severndale Specialist School

The stunning seaside garden that wowed the crowds at Shrewsbury Flower Show is now being recreated at Severndale Specialist School. When the students return from their summer holidays they will be greeted with quite a different view. Below is a photograph of the space beforehand.A big thank you to Synthetic Turf Management who were on site immediately after the show in order to lay the creative colourful flooring. Fish and sea creatures, designed by the students and cleverly created by Paul DT Technician at Severndale, swim happily amongst the waves. The surf shack is a perfect fit, and it is proposed that a programme of planting be introduced, so that the students can see the roof of the shack grow. The sea worn timbers, rescued from the beach at Borth, add to the seaside feel and will hold an array of coastal plants and grasses. It is anticipated the garden will be complete within the next few days, and therefore this post will be updated in due course.

August is always a busy time for us - two fairly large shows, almost back to back, keep us on our toes!Lanyon Bowdler have sponsored one of the Show Jumping classes at Shrewsbury Flower Show for a number of years. This year the class was on Saturday 13 August. About 25 riders completed the course in a timed competition. The sun shone and there was a good crowd who enjoyed an exciting competition where just 1/100th of a second split first and second place. The winner was Steven Whitaker riding Royal Rose, seen here clearing one of the jumps (with the famous St Chad's Church in the background).Partner Allison Birtles enjoys handing out the rosettes to the winners - fabulous shot below of her with William Funnell who came third on Beowulf. And of course, a mention for our wonderful show garden. This year we were thrilled to be awarded one of Shropshire Horticultural Society's Gold Medals for our Seaside Garden. We had so many people stop look at the garden, and listen to Beth Prior - who sang some wonderful songs with a true sunshine beachy feel.

Copper Workshops at Severndale Specialist School

Getting people involved is an essential aspect of our garden projects. Before long people at Lanyon Bowdler will start to grow Thrift and other coastal plants, for use in the show garden which will feature at Shrewsbury Flower Show. These plants will then be replanted in the garden to be recreated at Severndale Specialist School. But over the last couple of months some amazing copper workshops have been held at the school. Garden designer Mike Russell knows lots of people, and he has been able to introduce us to talented coppersmith Richard Taylor. Richard has spent time with the students and teachers, showing them how to create pieces of art, tiles and most importantly, the scales for the 'fish water feature' which will be part of the garden. The picture below show Richard working with copper.
Some of the pieces made during the various workshops....A copper fish....Trips to seaside are coming up, and we shall be meeting at the school to look at the material to be used for our 'sea experience' flooring. More will follow, but you can also keep up to date with the dedicated blog, which can be found here.

What About my Internet Accounts when I Die?

At some point yesterday whilst I was driving from one appointment to another or it may even have been on the way home, I heard someone talking about internet accounts and what happens to them when you die. Well it got me thinking, most of us must have a few; I have stacks - from Facebook to Twitter, sites to upload photographs such as Flickr and even a You Tube account. Much of the information is probably dull and of little interest to my next of kin, but things such as photographs, videos and even blogs, may hold cherished memories. I wonder how many of us have even thought about such things when we consider updating (or making), our will. What about eBay? Supposing you are in the process of selling/buying things someone will need to be able to gain access pretty quickly.I asked Edward Rees, partner and head of the private client department at Lanyon Bowdler for his thoughts. He said we're actually working on an information sheet for people to keep with their will and to lodge with us, on this we will ask them to make a note of internet accounts and passwords, so that nearest and dearest can make sure such accounts are closed down. Edward mentioned that officially it would be the Executors responsibility to close any internet accounts, but in reality unless someone keeps a list of where they have accounts and the passwords (even down to the details internet email accounts such as Hotmail), how would the Executor know where to start? Food for thought I do keep a record of all such accounts and passwords, partly because I can never remember what Im signed up to and certainly because I can never remember the passwords!

At Lanyon Bowdler we benefit from a Charity Committee made up by representatives from each of our offices. During the course of the year the committee ensures we hold events in order to raise funds to support our two chosen charities. This year, as with the last, the chosen charities are Club 2000 and Severndale Specialist School. Earlier this month we held a 'dress down day' where we raised a whopping 835.45 - our best ever figure! Most of the offices organised cakes and raffles - just take a look at the feast those in Ludlow enjoyed..During the course of the last 12 months, we have raised nearly 2,400 for these two charities - the money will be split and presented to them shortly.

A Seaside Garden for Severndale Specialist School & Shrewsbury Flower Show

Last years project with Headway Shropshire, to create a garden for the Shrewsbury Flower Show, was something totally new for us. Im no gardener and so it was going to be essential I find someone who knew what they were doing! I was put in touch with Mike Russell, a local garden designer from Church Stretton, and what a relief - he had some amazing ideas andof course we won Best Outdoor Garden!

We couldnt have succeeded last year without the tremendous support of those within Lanyon Bowdler who grew lots of veg and plants. But it was the talents of the clients at Headway Shropshire that really set the garden off.
So here we are once more, starting our next project and this year were creating something quite unique for Severndale Specialist School. Again there is going to be involvement from the charity beach combing expeditions are being planned already! People at Lanyon Bowdler havent been put off from the hard work last year we have plenty of volunteers who are keen to get growing.

The theme is a seaside garden, complete with driftwood, shells and coastal plants. The centre piece will be a customised sailing boat - accessible to all, including wheelchair users. A canopy above the boat will offer shelter from the sun (and rain!), plus an interactive Velcro backdrop will feature sea-life shapes all created by the pupils.

As the garden is going to be installed back at the school after the show, its going to be fantastic to give the pupils the opportunity to build on the theme and enjoy a thoroughly interactive, safe and sensory space.Progress of this exciting garden project will be shared in a variety of ways, such as on a dedicated blog:(http://severndalespecialistschoolgarden.wordpress.com/) and the firms Facebook page:(http://www.facebook.com/lanyonbowdler)

Hereford Expansion as Lanyon Bowdler Join Forces with Lewis & Co

Last week, in freezing temperatures, I took the train down to Hereford, as local firm Lewis & Co, situated on King Street, became Lanyon Bowdler! It has been a busy year in more ways than one the merger with LG Solicitors in May resulted in Lanyon Bowdler spreading into Oswestry and The Marches this new development, taking us into Hereford, means we really are covering a large region.Lanyon Bowdler are the NFU panel solicitors for Herefordshire, as well as for Shropshire & Staffordshire, having an office in Hereford will now give members convenient access to the full range of legal advice we offer. The Hereford office is headed up by partner Peter Lewis. Peter moved to Hereford from Cardiff in 1985 to form Peter Lewis & Co changing the name to Lewis & Co in 2000. Since then, Peter and Licensed Conveyancer, Sally Watkins, have been offering the residents of Hereford and the surrounding areas, with quality legal advice relating to all types of residential property transactions. Peter is involved locally with Herefordshire Motor Club and is a member of the Historic Rally Car Register.Of course we have plenty of things to do for starters I need to get the signage sorted out! But, these are exciting times and we will start promoting our presence in Hereford very soon.
