Lawyers Advise Shropshire and Herefordshire Students in Schools

We are often approached by schools, colleges and career advice centres who ask if Lanyon Bowdler can assist them with their career events, helping students interested in the law with their career choices. Our answer is always yes its great to be able to help out in the local community, and to demonstrate the diversity of roles which exist within a full practice law firm.
Its fortunate that we have plenty of extremely helpful legal and support staff, who are always more than willing to take the time out to go along to these events to talk about their role, the reality of what it involves, and how they took their first steps into a career in law. Not everyone takes the classic route into law, and there are far more options available than many students realise, so its good to be able to demonstrate real examples to students who may believe that a career in law is not an option for them.
As I write, one of our criminal defence lawyers Stephen Scully is at a local school assisting with a Magistrates Court mock trial mooting competition, which has been organised by the Citizenship Foundation. The aim of the competition is to give young people a glimpse of the legal system in an innovative and exciting way, whilst assisting with their learning and development. Stephen will be blogging about the mooting competition shortly so watch this space for an update!

Shropshire Youth Theatre to Perform Classic Play at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn

The ambitious Shropshire Youth Theatre is a hive of activity once more as preparations and rehearsals start in earnest for the companys next annual production Bertolt Brechts The Caucasian Chalk Circle, which will run on 23 and 24 March 2012 at Shrewsburys Theatre Severn. Lanyon Bowdler was delighted to sponsor the groups hugely successful March 2011 production of The Cherry Orchard, at the Theatre Severn and is only too pleased to support their next venture! The play tells the story of a servant girls growing bond with a baby she rescues in the midst of a revolution. The text also gives the actors the chance to form a small music group which will perform the accompaniment to the songs that form a vital part of the epic drama. In addition, the actors have to learn a new skill puppetry! This will mean special workshops and the opportunity for the company to rise to a new challenge! Committee Chairman Matthew Broomfield has been keeping us up to date on progress so far, and tells me that the rehearsals are coming along well and on schedule. At the moment they are working their way through the play and working on each scene as they come to it under the guidance of their director, Andrew Bannerman. The musicians have also been able to share some of their work with the actors to explore the sounds and rhythms to fit these in with the relevant sections of the play. Well look forward to hearing how they get on with their puppet rehearsals soon.

Looking Forward to the Summer Shows

Summer brings with it numerous excellent shows and events in Shropshire, and the marketing department has been busy preparing for Lanyon Bowdlers involvement in three of the major events in the county. On Thursday 4 August we will be at the Burwarton Show, one of the leading agricultural events in the country and always a thoroughly enjoyable day. We have a marquee and provide hot and cold drinks, serve delicious locally made cakes, and have Lanyon Bowdler lawyers on hand to answer any legal queries visitors may have. In addition, we will be holding a 'Guess the Number of Lanyon Bowdler Bears' competition, which will involve a batch of our popular bears being hidden away in a crate full of straw, with prizes for the first correct entries drawn. A new form of entertainment at the show this year will be the the 'Bridgnorth Scarecrow Trail' competition (in aid of cancer Research UK and The Stroke Association) which we have entered as it is for two very worthy causes and also sounds like a lot of fun! On Saturday 6 August we head to the Oswestry Showground for the Oswestry Show, now in its 126th year, and again we will be providing refreshments, and representatives from our Oswestry office on Church Street will be available to chat and offer assistance with any legal queries. We'll also be running the 'Guess the Number of Lanyon Bowdler Bears' competition again with further prizes on offer. Finally, on 12 and 13 August we will be at the Shrewsbury Flower Show with our seaside theme show garden entry! The garden has been created for Severndale Specialist School, one of our chosen charities for this year, and we are extremely fortunate to have had award winning garden designer Mike Russell on board with us again. Mike is very talented and always brings unique and inventive designs to the table. We really are on countdown to the show now, and it has been a lot of hard work and organisation, but we have all of our main features ready to go including the most amazing copper fish water feature - made by incredibly talented local craftsman Richard Taylor. The fish is designed to rock when the water flows through it and we are hoping it will draw the crowds!

Shropshire Youth Theatre Talent Sponsored by Lanyon Bowdler

Members of Shropshire Youth Theatre will be showcasing their talent in March 2011 with a production of Anton Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard at the Theatre Severn.
The play, which is being sponsored by Lanyon Bowdler will run for two performances, on the evening of Friday 18 March, with a matinee showing on Saturday 19 March. The Cherry Orchard is an extraordinary mix of tragedy and comedy, with a rich assortment of characters and a surprise ending.
Shropshire Youth Theatre was established in 1993 to provide a professionally staffed youth theatre company for Shrewsbury. It works across Shropshire, and is an independent, formally constituted group run by a small management committee.
It provides theatre activities for children and young people aged 5 to 25 years. The activities range from basic training in theatre skills, through street theatre and devising projects, to large scale performances staged at Shrewsburys Theatre Severn and workshop performances touring Shropshire schools and art centres.
Matt Broomfield, who is the Student Committee Chairman of Shropshrie Youth Theatre comments There are around 35 young people involved in the show; most of these are acting, but there are also those who are designing, purchasing and making costumes, and several students are working as stage management. Up until Christmas we were rehearsing once a week, but the rehearsals will become more frequent now we are into the New Year. We are all very excited at how the show is developing. There has been a lot of contribution from all the students who are involved in a variety of capacities, and a lot of hard work from director Andrew Bannerman, artistic director Maggie Love and Beverly Baker, who is in charge of costumes. There is still a way to go, but the show promises to live up to the high standards of Shrewsbury Youth Theatre shows so far!
There will be more news in due course on how rehearsals are progressing so do keep checking the blog for updates.

Successful Summer Shows

It has been a busy month! Lanyon Bowdler had a presence at three local shows during August Burwarton Show, Oswestry Show and the Shrewsbury Flower Show.
On Thursday 5 August we went along to Burwarton Show, and had a great day entertaining clients and visitors with cold drinks, cheese and biscuits and some delicious cakes -which were very popular! We also held a competition for the chance to win rail travel to London and a trip on the London Eye plus other smaller prizes. We received a large number of entries into the competition, with the prize winners being announced at the end of the day. Our thanks and appreciation go to Wrexham & Shropshire Rail who very kindly donated the rail tickets for the competition.
Fresh from Burwarton, we were at the Oswestry Show on Saturday 7 August, this time entertaining clients and visitors whilst serving strawberries and cream with refreshing cold drinks, and also dodging the typically British summer showers! The weather didnt seem to put people off though as we received plenty of visitors, and again a large number of entries into our competition to win an iPod Touch. The lucky winner was drawn at the end of the day.
On 13 and 14 August, we attended the Shrewsbury Flower Show with our Show Garden entry on behalf of local charity Headway Shropshire. The garden, designed by local garden designer Mike Russell was the result of many months of team work, recorded in Diary of a Show Garden, and it paid off - we won! We were awarded the Mike Hough Memorial Trophy for Best Outdoor Show Garden, plus a Gold Medal, which was a tribute to all those who had been involved and put so much effort into this wonderful project. Chief Executive of Headway Shropshire, Jean Robinson, was present as our win was announced, and was obviously thrilled. We also had several clients from Headway Shropshire with us over the two days, so it was very much a team effort, and we were delighted with the high number of visitors to the garden.

Horticultural Workshop at Headway Shropshire

The rain clouds didnt bode well for the horticultural workshop scheduled for this morning at the Headway Shropshire garden, however it didnt put anyone off! Amanda and I had gone along to Headway Shropshire to help Mike Russell, our show garden designer, with a horticultural workshop he was holding for the clients of Headway. The idea of the workshop was to involve the clients in potting on the vegetable produce and companion plants currently being grown at Headway for inclusion in the show garden. As gardening is renowned as being very therapeutic, it was also an excellent rehabilitative exercise for the clients. The workshop got started at 9.30am, with a gazebo being set up in the garden to shelter us all from the imminent rain, whilst Mike brought along tables and benches for the Headway clients to work at, together with numerous bags of potting compost and spare pots. Several of the Headway clients then joined us and were soon getting their hands dirty re-potting plants, transferring seedlings, and digging the ground. I made myself useful by transferring marigolds from their seedling trays into large pots to enable them to grow on, and also made sure I seized the opportunity for plenty of photographs. Luckily we managed to get the majority of the planting done before the rain started! It was clear that the Headway clients thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially as they came back after lunch to carry on with the gardening after the workshop had finished!

The plans for our Headway Shropshire Show Garden are now starting to take shape, and following another meeting with our garden designer, Mike Russell this afternoon, I have come away with a list of requirements in the plant and produce department! Weve asked for Lanyon Bowdler staff to volunteer to help grow plants at home to add to the show garden, and weve had a good response so far.but the more the merrier so any additional volunteers are most welcome! I will be mucking in and growing what I can, as gardening is something I enjoy doing in my spare time so its great that I get to be involved with it at work too. Ive already got some sweet peas on the go, which are growing furiously at the moment! Ill be co-ordinating our volunteers and establishing what they need to grow - its going to be a real group effort, and all of the updates can be found at http://headwayshowgarden.wordpress.com so watch this space!

My New Career in Marketing

The New Year is traditionally a time for fresh starts, and this certainly applied to me at the end of January when I took up my new post as Marketing Assistant within Lanyon Bowdlers Marketing Department. I started working for Lanyon Bowdler in September last year, having relocated to Shrewsbury from Aberdeen. I initially worked in the Clinical Negligence department, and so this post was quite a change of direction for me, and aside from it appearing incredibly interesting, I thought it would be a new challenge, and I have not been disappointed so far!Despite only having been here for just over four weeks, already Ive had a fascinating insight into how the Marketing department raises the profile of the firm, and all the various different tools it uses to do this. Ive also discovered just how much support Lanyon Bowdler provides to local businesses, schools, and charities - which is where a lot of my work will be generated!Aside from the usual new job hurdles, such as finding out where everything is kept, learning new systems, etc, my first few weeks have involved getting to grips with, and editing, a huge database of contacts, together with handling the arrangements for an Employment Law Seminar chaired by John Merry, partner and head of the Employment Law department, which was held at the Park House Hotel in Shifnal on 11 February. It all paid off, however, as the seminar was successful and our feedback was very positive. It was a real case of in at the deep end, but I did say I liked a challenge..!It also appears that Ive joined just at the right time too, as the forthcoming months are packed with shows, seminars, careers fayres and other events, such as the Burwarton Agricultural Show on 5 August 2010, and the Shrewsbury Flower Show on 14 and 15 August 2010. As part of Lanyon Bowdlers involvement in the Flower Show, we will be creating a garden in conjunction with the charity Headway Shropshire, who are being sponsored by the firm. This is all very exciting for me as I really enjoy gardening! As with any new job, there is always a lot to learn and it can initially be quite daunting, but my working environment is very friendly and I am receiving fantastic support so I can only Iook forward to the months ahead!
