Force Against Burglars to be Allowed

Justice Minister, Chris Grayling, has announced today how the government proposes to 'clarify' the law on Burglary following some recent high profile cases in the press.

The law currently states that a home-owner can use 'reasonable or proportionate force' to defend themselves or their property which has worked well for a number of years.

However the government are now proposing to "raise the bar" and allow people to use sufficient force so long as it is not 'grossly disproportionate'. It will be interesting to see how they propose to define this.

The changes could in fact create more confusion to people. It suggests  people can use more force than they currently do so long as they do not go over the top.

Will it allow homeowners to 'beat up' an intruder so long as they do not go too far? Will trespassers arm themselves in case they disturb a home-owner and wish to fight to escape?

The current law seems to work well and therefore "if it ain't broke then don't fix it!"
