Home Secretary Considers Limits on Police Bail

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, has announced that she is considering placing limits on the length of time a suspect is allowed to be held on police bail.

Currently, the Police are releasing suspects on bail for as long as it takes to complete their investigations.  Indeed, we currently represent clients who have been on bail for weeks and in some cases months.

Limited to 28 Days

Under the new proposals, Police bail will be limited to a maximum of 28 days, unless exceptional circumstances apply.

This appears to be a response to recent high profile investigations that lasted for months but ultimately resulted in no further action being taken against the suspects.

If the changes do go through, it may result in the Police changing their approach, either releasing people from bail, or delaying arrests.
