Metal on Metal Hip Replacements - Further Device Alert

Following on from my earlier blog “Metal on metal hip replacements – Should you be concerned?” dated 31 January 2012, a further medical device alert was issued by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) on 25 June 2012 concerning the metal liner component of the R3 acetabular system, manufactured by Smith and Nephew Orthopaedics Ltd.

This component has now been withdrawn by the manufacturers and patients with the metal liners are to be identified and recommendations for management of those affected patients published, including annual follow up for both symptomatic and non symptomatic patients.

Patients who have undergone a hip replacement or resurfacing with a metal on metal component, or who may be unsure as to whether this applies to them, are advised to speak with their surgeon or GP to establish whether they are indeed within the small group of patients who had this component and require review.

If you have any questions with regard to metal on metal hip prosthetics please do not hesitate to call the Clinical Negligence Team at Lanyon Bowdler on 01743 280280.
