New Guidelines for Theft Offences

Earlier this week, the Sentencing Guideline Council issued new guidelines for Theft offences which will be used from 1 February 2016.

Whilst the value of what is stolen will remain an important factor in determining the sentence, greater consideration will now be given to the impact on the victim, for example the emotional distress and inconvenience caused.

For the first time, factors such as harm to people (eg stealing electricity cables) and theft of historic artefacts (eg plaques from war memorials) are considered under the comprehensive guidelines.
