Shrewsbury High School Students Gain An Insight into the World of Law

Bright and early one Monday morning it was back to school for me... however this time there were no first day nerves!  Instead, I had been invited back to Shrewsbury High School to give a series of presentations to groups of Year 10 girls at their annual ‘Careers Uncovered’ morning.

The aim of the morning was to provide the girls with a real insight into the world of work through presentations by representatives from a variety of professions and businesses.  The girls had chosen four career presentations from the many on offer, based on the areas of work which they were interested in learning more about.

As ever, law was very popular and all my sessions were well attended.  In order to give the girls a real feel for 'a day in the life of a solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler' I took along some photos of me and my colleagues ‘at work’  to give my presentation more of a ‘real’ feel.  My (not very imaginative..!) photos went down very well with the girls who felt more able to connect with the world of work through the photos on the screen, and begin understanding the role of a solicitor and what we do on a day to day basis.

After four presentations I was totally exhausted! More to the point, relieved I chose a career in law rather than teaching!  That aside, it was an enjoyable morning which I am sure the girls found very helpful and a great start for their preparations for their future careers.  Whilst some students were clearly already focused on a career in law some were undecided so it was nice to be able to provide some insightful and real information to assist them in making that hard decision of what to do when they leave school and enter the real world!
