Supermarket Special Offers and Promotions

It is encouraging to note that eight supermarkets have signed up to a set of principles drawn up by the Office of Fair Trading (“OFT”) designed to encourage fair and transparent pricing and information on special offers and promotions. 

This follows concerns that supermarkets have been failing to operate within the spirit of the law over special offers and promotions for food and drink.  Although the OFT did not find that supermarkets were in breach of the law, it did discover an inconsistency in the way the law is being interpreted and applied. 

Trading Standards will take action if the OFT voluntary code is not complied with.
